Frontier Report: Stunning Victory at a High Price
The Spanish-French border was the scene of much glory and bloodshed this month, as the combined French forces were able to repulse several assaults by the Spanish Army. The RNHB, the Frontier regiment, and the Crown Prince Cuirassiers were ordered to hold the key stronghold, Forteresse du Soleil, at all costs. Its fall would allow the Spanish access to the lightly defended interior country, and would cancel the advances scored in the previous Summer Campaign.
Knowing that an attack much eventually come, the French Intelligence Service never let their vigilance lag, and when orders were dispatched for the Spanish to attack, the French Field Marshal knew of them almost before the Spanish general in charge of the attack! With the recent arrival of the all-cavalry Crown Prince Cuirassiers, a new plan was designed using the great mobility of the CPC that went beyond mere defense, and instead would, if successful, ensure that the Spanish army was crushed and driven from the field.
The enemy arrived, and appeared ready to dig in and prepare for a long siege. Instead of allowing that, the RNHB sallied forth and engaged the besieging forces! The larger Spanish army engaged, and the combat was horrific. After the two forces were entirely engaged, the CPC, sent away days earlier for just such an attack, arrived on queue and ran wild among the unformed Spanish infantry. At that time, the Frontier regiment sallied forth and added its support to the outnumbered RNHB, and the two turned back the tide. The Spanish, unable to form infantry squares under such assault, were bloodied greatly by the CPC. With the combined attacks of the RNHB/Frontier regiment, they broke and were scattered by the harrying cavalry, who then turned to the grim business of running down fleeing Spaniards.

Game Notes

A stunning victory such as this does not happen by accident. It is made possible by heroic actions and sacrifices by brave soldiers. Private Bullion de Beuf, serving with the RNHB, was in the front of the sallying charge, and was mentioned twice posthumously for his courage, which was a great credit to himself and the French Army. Despite only recently enlisting, Privates Blacque Jacques Shelaque and Jacques Inzabox were both mentioned for exemplary bravery. When a cannon blast killed Shelaque and his commanding Subaltern, Jacques Inzabox stepped up, and renewed the faltering attack by rallying his fellow soldiers. His quick thinking under fire earned him a promotion to Subaltern. No less brave were Privates Palis Mediccie and Pierre Robierre, both of whom were killed when their unit was cut off and surrounded by enemies. Despite Robierre's determined last stand, earning him a mention, it was no use, as he was killed before help could arrive.
The star of the Crown Prince Cuirassiers was in ascendance this battle, as they earned no less than 5 mentions and promotions. Captains Jean D'Argenlieu and Morgan Saint Aulaye were much talked about, earning two and one mention respectively. Captain D'Argenlieu led his squad to the Spanish artillery, taking the cannon out of action before they could become a threat, while Captain Saint Aulaye, heedless of his own personal safely, led his men into the thickest knots of enemy troops, thereby preventing them from rallying. Father Jean Valjean, rather than staying out of danger, spent his time in the midst of the battle, offering last rites to the dying and saving those he could. His courage was so stalwart that he was mentioned as well. Finally, Colonel Roi Tisserie, whose plan the cavalry sneak attack had been, led his regiment with distinction. His calm and skill in battle caught the eye of the Field Marshal, who brevetted him to the rank of Brigadier General. While the rank is brevet, Tisserie will continue to serve as commanding officer of the CPC.
When the fighting was finished, Spanish dead outnumbered French by 3-1, and the enemy lay broken and scattered. This was a glorious victory for the French military, and though a high price was paid, the knowledge that the Spanish will not be able to threaten our borders any time soon must surely be enough to outweigh the body count.

King Considers Several For Titles
With the victory fresh in his mind, King Louis XIV considered several war heroes for titles of nobility. Though there were truly many heroes, only Brigadier General Roi Tisserie was judged worthy and made a Chevalier. Insiders noted that this was not the first time general was considered for a title. It seems that the King prefers to see prospective nobles a few times in action before he grants them a title.

A Love Triangle Gone Bad
Kristen's doorstep was a very popular place again this month, with a total of three gentlemen dropping by in the first week of November. Those seen were Henri Ballons, Duncan de Baucherie and Etienne Lourdin. HB came with the bare minimum of flowers; perhaps hoping his high social level and his dashing Royal Foot Guard uniform would impress his ladylove. DdB opened his wallet more, no doubt assuming that the additional gifts he bore would make up for his less impressive portfolio. The real big spender was EL, who arrived with an entourage, including several musicians to "set the proper mood." Perhaps because of the serious cash being dropped, no one would back down, and times were set up for a more private resolution of the matter, out of the eye of those who enforce the King's law.

Kristen Taken Happily Off the Market
After lamenting to her maid that she would never meet Mr. Right, Kristen was forced to eat her words, as Henri Ballons dropped by in the second week and swept her off her feet, literally, if not figuratively. When she inquired about the little matter of a few duels over her, HB laughed them off, assuring his new woman that he would swiftly dispatch his (former) rivals. Later in the month, Kristen was heard confiding in her maid that though HB wasn't exactly a big spender, there was just something about him that set her heart aflutter.

Stiff Competition Draws Eligible Ladies
No doubt in response to the glut of single gentlemen, and the ensuing scramble for mistresses, several young ladies have arrived from the provinces to seek their own fortune. Perhaps to the worldly Parisians, they might seem a little country, but the Paris Times asks that gentlemen keep an open mind, and give these young women a chance. We're certain they will!

You Want to Fight Whom?
Etienne Lourdin was relieved when he showed up for his duel with Father Jean Valjean that the priest had left his foil at home. After determining that JV was in no mood to fight, EL suggested that perhaps he follow the advice he gave so beautifully from the pulpit and enjoy his vow of chastity.
An unusual situation occurred when Pierre N'Port met Morgan Saint Aulaye to settle their dispute. For currently unknown reasons, both men came determined not to duel. As neither wanted to fight, no duel occurred, and everyone just went home, some more disappointed than others.

Crickets, Anyone?
Paris was surprisingly dead for a November, with not a single party to be had. Henri Ballons was seen with Kristen in week three, but that was the extent of the social activity for the month… for anyone! The rest of the gentlemen left behind stayed indoors for most of the month, the notable exception being the two weeks that Luc Dupon spent in gaol.
